Julien Beckaert serves as an ATER (temporary teaching and research assistant) in the Faculty of Applied Foreign Languages at the University of Artois, specializing in English instruction. Concurrently, he is a fourth-year PhD candidate in British Civilization at the University of Lille's CECILLE Laboratory (ULR 4074), where his doctoral research examines radical periodicals from late 18th-century England.
Beckaert's scholarly work centers on British political radicalism (1790-1800), eighteenth-century British culture and literature, periodical studies, and media literature. His thesis analyzes editorial strategies in three radical publications—Pig's Meat, Politics for the People, and The Argus—demonstrating how columnists Thomas Spence, Daniel Eaton, and Sampson Perry repurposed 17th-18th century literary traditions to advance revolutionary political agendas within the context of Britain's response to the French Revolution and historical materialism.
His 2023 article on William Morris bridges art history and socialist thought, reflecting broader trends in his research that connect media studies with transnational political movements. Beckaert actively contributes to academic discourse through conference presentations at venues including the CECILLE Laboratory Doctoriales, SEAA Doctoral Days, and H2020 DIGITENS project events.
As a founding member of the Junior Laboratory 'CÉDILLE' and editor-in-chief of the 'Global History, Politics, and Societies' research notebook (Axis 3, CECILLE Laboratory), he facilitates scholarly exchange while organizing academic events such as the 12th Doctoriales conference. His engagement with digital humanities methodologies for corpus analysis further demonstrates interdisciplinary research integration.
