Dr Julie Walsh is a Senior Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Sheffield's School of Sociological Studies, Politics and International Relations. She holds a PhD from the University of Hull and has extensive experience in youth work, community development, and postdoctoral research. Her work focuses on migration policy impacts, family dynamics, social care practices, and qualitative methodologies.
Qualifications: BA (Hons) International English (Hull), MSc Applied Social Research (Hull), PhD Sociology, Anthropology & Gender Studies (Hull).
Research interests include transnational families, social work decision-making, immigration policy effects, and collaborative community approaches. She leads an ESRC-funded project examining 'Everyday Bordering' in the UK, exploring how immigration policies shape migrant families' interactions with social care systems. Her studies emphasize cross-cultural family conceptualizations and their implications for welfare practices.
Teaching responsibilities include undergraduate courses on family sociology and postgraduate research methods. She actively supervises doctoral candidates and welcomes PhD applications in her research areas. Her work bridges theory and practice, advocating for inclusive, community-centered approaches to social research and policy.
Key projects include the NORFACE-funded FACSK initiative analyzing social work with complex families across eight welfare states, and a resource guide for practitioners working with migrant communities. Her research often employs innovative qualitative methods, including ethnography and participatory approaches.
