Julie Prytulak is a Professor in the Department of Earth, Ocean & Atmospheric Sciences at the University of British Columbia (UBC), affiliated with the Faculty of Science. Her research focuses on inorganic geochemistry, particularly isotope geochemistry, magma processes, and subduction zone dynamics. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Bristol (2008), M.S. from Washington State University (2004), and B.Sc. (Honors) in Geology from Carleton University (2002).
Her research interests include magma generation on Earth and other planets, element transfer in subduction zones, subduction initiation, and metal transport in surface/near-surface environments. She develops novel analytical methods, such as stable isotope techniques for tracing geochemical processes. Recent work emphasizes rhenium and vanadium isotopes to study oxidative weathering, magmatic evolution, and crustal differentiation.
Her 15 most recent articles (2024–2022) span topics like rhenium isotope behavior in Icelandic systems, vanadium fractionation in plutonic rocks, and nitrogen isotope dynamics in magmatic systems. These studies highlight her expertise in linking experimental mineralogy with isotopic data to address fundamental and applied geoscientific questions.
Prytulak advises graduate students (e.g., M.A. Stow, W. Wang) and collaborates widely, with funding supporting projects on subduction zone processes and isotope geochemistry. She contributes to research groups at UBC and international initiatives like IODP Expedition 352, focusing on subduction initiation. Her work bridges traditional geochemistry with cutting-edge analytical techniques, advancing understanding of Earth’s dynamic systems.
