معرفی
Julie MÉTAIS serves as a Lecturer and teacher-researcher at the Interdisciplinary Laboratory for Solidarity, Societies, Territories (LISST) within the University of Toulouse-Jean Jaurès. Her work spans anthropology, ethnology, and prehistory with specialized focus on political anthropology in the Americas, particularly examining territory, sovereignty, and social conflict.
Her research investigates contestation processes through schools and local festivals in Mexico and Brazil, analyzing social construction of otherness, political-educational utopias, and violence manifestations. Recently, she pioneered sound-based methodologies exploring listening and recording resources to document conflict and dissenting voices, reflecting an innovative interdisciplinary approach merging ethnography with sonic studies. This evolution demonstrates her commitment to methodological innovation in political anthropology.
Analysis of her 2018-2024 publications reveals a cohesive trajectory toward sound anthropology as a critical lens for studying political violence and social movements. Key thematic clusters include teacher activism in Oaxaca, indigenous sovereignty regimes, and sensory methodologies, with consistent geographical focus on Latin America and theoretical grounding in political anthropology.
MÉTAIS coordinates international research initiatives including the France/Brazil CAPES-COFECUB program on indigenous regimes (2018-2022) and held prestigious Marie Sklodowska Curie and ULB postdoctoral fellowships examining police diversity and sound anthropology. She actively contributes to academic discourse through editorial roles for Human Condition/Political Conditions (LAP-EHESS Paris) and Cahiers de la recherche pour l’éducation et les savoirs.
Her institutional home is LISST, a major interdisciplinary social sciences laboratory, where she teaches anthropology across undergraduate and graduate levels. She also participates in the AHA collective (Anthropological Hybridization Workshops) in Brussels, demonstrating transnational scholarly engagement.
