Julie Kalman is a Professor of History at Monash University specializing in Jewish, French, and Australian histories. She focuses on topics like Jewish emancipation, Mediterranean trade networks, migration, and cultural imperialism. Her recent work includes The Kings of Algiers, exploring two Jewish families' role in the Napoleonic-era Mediterranean, and projects on post-WWII France through Asterix comics and global pearl trade networks connecting Australia to Europe.
Her research spans European imperialism, anti-Semitic discourses, and cultural phenomena like the Eurovision Song Contest. She has led major projects including SMUGGLED: An Illegal History of Journeys to Australia and studies on Sephardic Jews in Mediterranean trade. She serves as Editor-in-Chief of French History and Civilization and has organized international conferences on European history.
Kalman's publications bridge global and local histories, linking Jewish merchant networks to imperial rivalries, and exploring how popular culture constructs national identity. Her current projects reimagine post-war France through comic narratives and trace transnational Jewish economic activities.
Grant activities include a John Legge Fellowship (2023-2025), ARC-funded research on Sephardic Jews, and projects analyzing migration narratives. She advises PhD students in Jewish/French history, Australian migration, and cultural imperialism studies.
