Julie Darnell is an Associate Professor and Program Director of the Bachelor of Science in Public Health at Loyola University Chicago’s Parkinson School of Health Sciences and Public Health. She holds a PhD in Social Service Administration from the University of Chicago, alongside degrees in Government and Health Policy. Her research focuses on strengthening primary care safety nets, particularly through improving access to care for marginalized populations via free clinics and patient navigation programs. Darnell is committed to Loyola’s Jesuit mission of serving vulnerable communities and has been instrumental in developing the undergraduate public health program within the school.

Research Focus: Darnell’s work centers on enhancing healthcare access for low-income uninsured patients through evidence-based interventions. Her scholarship emphasizes the critical role of free clinics as part of the primary care safety net, advocating for policy changes and practical solutions to address healthcare disparities. She has contributed to national studies on patient navigation programs, demonstrating their efficacy in improving cancer screening adherence and diagnostic care outcomes.
Lab/Team Affiliation: Engaged with Loyola’s Center for Health Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CHIE) and the Institute for Translational Medicine (ITM), focusing on implementation science and community-driven health solutions.
