Julie Brines is an Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Washington. She holds a PhD from Harvard University and researches how gender governs labor division and resource distribution within families, with particular focus on consequences for family stability. Her interdisciplinary approach combines sociology with economics and social psychology.
Brines examines economic dependency patterns, housework allocation dynamics, and the production of relational 'goods' in marital and cohabiting unions. Her influential work has established connections between household task division, economic arrangements, and relationship durability. Recent research investigates how gendered work patterns influence sexual frequency in marriages through an innovative theoretical framework.
Current projects include collaborative work on unemployment, housing markets, and marital disruption during economic recessions. She maintains affiliations with the Center for Studies in Demography and Ecology and the Center for Statistics in the Social Sciences.
