Julie Bawin

Julie Bawin is a Professor of Contemporary Art History at the University of Liège where she directs all teaching and research in the field. She holds significant leadership positions including Head of the Sart Tilman Open-Air Contemporary Art Museum and Chair of the FNRS contact group Museums and Contemporary Art.

Dr. Bawin's research interests focus on contemporary art history, Japonism, Art Nouveau, museum studies, curatorial practices, and public art. Her work demonstrates particular expertise in the influence of Japanese art on European artistic movements, especially the relationship between ukiyo-e prints and Belgian Art Nouveau posters.

Her recent publications show a clear trajectory from historical studies of Japonism toward contemporary curatorial practices and public art controversies. The 2024-2025 publications indicate active scholarship addressing current issues in exhibition practices and public art discourse.
