Julian Self is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Polytechnique Montréal. He is affiliated with the Centre for Research in Computational Thermochemistry (CRCT) and focuses on the physical chemistry of liquid electrolytes for energy storage and recycling applications.
- PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from University of California, Berkeley
- M.Sc. in Physics from Dalhousie University
Research interests include:
- Thermodynamics and electrochemistry of Li-ion and multivalent battery electrolytes
- Computational modeling of ion correlations and solvation structures
- Recycling applications through ionometallurgy
- Phase equilibria and transport phenomena in low-temperature electrolytes
- Microwave spectroscopy and calorimetry for electrolyte characterization
Scientific achievements:
- 2023 recipient of NSERC Research Grant ($2.6 million total to 42 researchers)
- Published 15+ articles (2015-2025) on battery electrolytes, solvation effects, and phase diagrams
- Developed theoretical frameworks for freezing point depression and solvent activity modeling
Supervision includes:
- Dyhia Ait Amer (2023 M.Sc. thesis on iron/cobalt sulfate dissolution kinetics)
Research group operates within the CRCT, combining experimental (calorimetry, spectroscopy) and computational approaches to address electrolyte design challenges.
