Julian Hinz is a Professor of International Economics at Bielefeld University and head of the Research Center Trade Policy at the Kiel Institute for the World Economy. His dual appointments position him at the forefront of research on international trade policy, sanctions regimes, and economic integration. Previously, he served as an assistant professor at Bielefeld University, head of the Kiel Institute's Trade Policy Task Force, and a visiting assistant professor at the Düsseldorf Institute for Competition Economics.
Hinz holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the Paris School of Economics and Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. His research operates at the intersection of international economics and data science, focusing on international trade and its connection with foreign policy, the spatial dimension of international trade, migration and finance, and related questions in applied econometrics. His methodological approach emphasizes policy-relevant questions that utilize state-of-the-art quantitative methods, often involving big data, and the development of econometric techniques to handle such data.
His recent publication portfolio reveals a strong emphasis on contemporary trade policy challenges, particularly analyzing the impacts of US trade policies under the Trump administration, EU responses to protectionism, and the effects of sanctions on international relations. His work frequently employs the KITE Model Suite, which has become influential in simulating trade war scenarios and their economic consequences. A notable pattern across his recent work is the application of unconventional data sources and the development of tools for estimating models with high-dimensional fixed effects.
