Dr Julian Clark is a Professor (Reader) in Political Geography at the University of Birmingham. He holds a BA (Hons) from Oxford University, an MSc from Wye College, and a PhD from University College London. His research focuses on critical understandings of the state and governance of natural resources, particularly examining how states materialize through geographies of diplomacy and environmental governance. He has advised the UK House of Lords on EU legislation and the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology on precision farming.
Clark’s work includes projects like the Leverhulme-funded 'Hidden Depths' addressing sand mining sustainability in India and Bangladesh, and EU-funded PyroLife on wildfire governance in Southern Europe. He has authored four monographs, including The Modalities of European Union Governance (Oxford UP) and The Spatialities of Europeanization (Routledge). His research spans 80 peer-reviewed articles and involves collaborations with institutions like the FAO, European University (Cyprus), and Università degli Studi di Torino.
He has supervised 15 doctoral students and currently advises five PhD candidates. His grants include ESRC and NERC-DFID funding for studies on sand extraction in Northern Ireland and wildfire management frameworks.
