Julia Swan is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Linguistics and Language Development at San José State University's College of Humanities and the Arts. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 2016. Her scholarship focuses on sociolinguistics and phonetics/phonology, particularly examining sociophonetic variation in relation to social identity across dialects including African American English, Pacific Northwest English, and Canadian English.
Dr. Swan has investigated institutional discrimination against students from stigmatized language backgrounds and teaches courses in language/culture/society, sociolinguistics, and bilingualism. Prior to SJSU, she served as Visiting Assistant Professor at Reed College and taught Academic Writing for International Students at Seattle University and Seattle Colleges.
