Julia Strand is a Professor of Psychology at Carleton College, where she has taught since 2011. She holds a B.A. in Psychology & English from Tufts University, an M.A. and Ph.D. from Washington University in St. Louis (Brain, Behavior, & Cognition program), and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in the Laboratory of Sensory Neuroscience and Neuroengineering at Washington University.
Her research explores spoken language perception, listening effort, and methodological rigor in psychology. She is a leading advocate for open science, developing widely recognized educational materials on research transparency. Her work integrates cognitive psychology with meta-science to improve reproducibility practices.
She has secured significant external funding, including:
- NIH AREA grant R15DC018114-01 (2019-2023): 'Evaluating the listening effort associated with audiovisual speech' ($404,634)
- NIH AREA grant R15DC018114-02 (2023-2026): 'Listening effort and audiovisual speech by L1 and LX English speakers' ($435,885)
- AAC&U grant for 'Teaching Open Science Practices at Liberal Arts Colleges' workshop (2023, $20,000)
Honors include a commendation from the Society for the Improvement of Psychological Science for her course 'Psychology’s Credibility Revolution.' She mentors students through directed research projects and capstone seminars.
She leads outreach through her YouTube channel, podcast (The Juice and the Squeeze), and service as Associate Editor for Advances in Methods and Practices in Psychological Science.
