Julia R. Lieberman is a Professor of Spanish and International Studies at Saint Louis University’s College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures. She specializes in Sephardic history, Jewish studies, and early modern cultural exchanges between Jewish, Christian, and Islamic communities. Her research focuses on charity practices, diaspora identity, and the intersection of religion and daily life in early modern Europe and the Ottoman Empire.
Dr. Lieberman holds a Ph.D. and M.Phil. from Yale University (1989 and 1987). Her work bridges literary analysis, historical research, and cultural studies, often centering on Spanish and Portuguese Sephardic communities. She has authored/co-edited books like *Charity in Jewish, Christian, and Islamic Traditions* (2017) and *Sephardi Family Life in the Early Modern Diaspora* (2011).
Her research has been supported by grants from the Mellon Foundation, the Hadassah-Brandeis Institute, and the Institute for Israeli Studies. Notable awards include the 2013 Helen I. Mandeville Award for Excellence in Teaching. Lieberman actively participates in professional organizations such as the Association for Jewish Studies and the Modern Language Association.
Her academic service includes mentoring over 20 students in research projects, organizing interdisciplinary conferences, and delivering lectures on Israel Studies and Sephardic culture. She has conducted archival research in London, Jerusalem, and Chicago, contributing to global scholarly networks in Jewish and Mediterranean studies.
