Julia Mendoza is an Associate Professor of Law at Loyola Law School, Loyola Marymount University. She joined the faculty in 2022 and specializes in interdisciplinary legal scholarship focusing on criminal law, education equity, and racial justice. Her research examines the historical and structural roots of the school-to-prison pipeline, particularly in Stockton, California. She holds a JD from UC Davis School of Law, an MA in Human Rights from Columbia University, and an MA and PhD in American Studies from New York University.

Her current book project, The Miseducation of the Barrio: The School to Prison Pipeline in Stockton, California (under contract with Stanford University Press), combines archival research and fieldwork to explore racial disparities in educational systems and carceral policies. Previously, she served as a legal fellow at the ACLU of Northern California and a fellow at Stanford Law School.
Her published work includes analyses of carcerality, abolitionist legal frameworks, and the intersection of policing and education. She frequently presents on topics like community-based research and racial justice advocacy.
Prof. Mendoza’s advocacy includes legislative and public education initiatives targeting systemic racism in schools and criminal justice systems. Her interdisciplinary approach bridges legal scholarship with grassroots organizing.
