Julia Lum is an Assistant Professor of Art History at Scripps College. Her research focuses on British art, landscape studies, photography, and the visual histories of empire and the Pacific. She holds a Ph.D. in Art History from Yale University, an M.A. from Carleton University, and a B.A. from the University of British Columbia.
Lum’s work interrogates colonial encounters through art, emphasizing Indigenous perspectives and material culture. She teaches courses such as *Art & the British Empire* and *History of Photography*, exploring topics like Pacific voyages, photographic archives, and colonial landscapes. Her research spans eighteenth-century Indigenous diplomacy, Chinese Canadian vernacular photography, and Tasmanian colonial art.
Lum has been awarded prestigious fellowships including the Getty ACLS Postdoctoral Fellowship (2023–24) and the Theron Rockwell Field Prize (2018). Her publications analyze transnational art practices, counter-historical narratives, and decolonizing methodologies. She collaborates with scholars like Kailani Polzak and Gerald McMaster, co-editing special issues on themes like *The Entangled Gaze*.
