Julia Kowalczyk

Julia Kowalczyk is a Researcher at the Department of Mathematics, Technical University of Munich (TUM), affiliated with the School of Computation, Information and Technology. She is part of the Chair of Optimal Control under Prof. Dr. Boris Vexler, focusing on Nemytskii operators in semilinear partial differential equations and neural networks in optimal control.

• Education: Master’s in Mathematics (2021) with thesis on neural networks in optimal control, Bachelor’s in Mathematics (2019).
• Research: Combines mathematical optimization, PDEs, and machine learning, particularly addressing nonsmooth superposition operators and spurious local minima in neural network training.
• Publications: Co-authored two recent works on optimal control problems with nonsmooth operators and neural network training challenges.
• Teaching: Conducted tutorial sessions for Analysis 1 and 2 since 2021, developed Moodle tests, and supervised a Master’s thesis on numerical solutions of PDEs.
