Dr. Julia Friese is a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Marine Ecosystem Dynamics and Management group at the Institute of Marine Ecosystem and Fisheries Sciences (IMF), University of Hamburg. She operates within the Department of Biology under the Faculty of Mathematics, Computer Science and Natural Sciences, conducting field-based research on North Sea and Wadden Sea ecosystems from her office at Olbersweg 24, Room 207.
Her educational background includes:
- PhD (2014-2021) from University of Hamburg on “An empirical evaluation of the quality of salt marshes for nekton in the Wadden Sea habitat mosaic” supervised by Prof. Dr. Axel Temming and Dr. Andreas Dänhardt
- MSc in Marine Ecosystem and Fisheries Sciences (2010-2014) with thesis on “Spatial distribution of fishing effort in relation to stock status and distribution” supervised by Prof. Dr. Axel Temming and Dr. Alexander Kempf
- BSc in Biology (2007-2010) with thesis on “Analysis of trophic competition between selected demersal fish species of the North Sea” supervised by Prof. Dr. Axel Temming and Dr. Jens Floeter
Dr. Friese’s research centers on population dynamics of marine resources, with specialized focus on fishing mortality impacts, predator-prey relationships, and spatial-temporal scaling of ecosystem functions. Her work integrates field studies of species migration patterns, habitat connectivity mechanisms, and epifaunal habitat utilization in intertidal zones. Current investigations examine how abiotic factors and anthropogenic activities shape nursery habitats in salt-marsh ecosystems.
Her publication record (2018-2023) reveals consistent contributions to Crangon fisheries management through ICES Working Group reports and high-impact journal articles. Research themes demonstrate methodological progression from observational habitat studies to integrated ecosystem modeling, with increasing emphasis on climate resilience and anthropogenic impact assessment in Wadden Sea ecosystems.
Professional recognition includes:
- Bauer-Hollmann-Stiftung PhD Scholarship for INTERFACE project (2014-2017)
Dr. Friese actively contributes to major third-party funded initiatives including CRANMAN 2 (2023-2026), GenMeMo (2021-2024), and previous CRANMAN (2018-2022) projects. Her collaborative work with Thünen Institute for Sea Fisheries focuses on genetic stock monitoring, fisheries management systems, and ecosystem-based approaches to coastal resource conservation.
As core member of the Marine Ecosystem Dynamics and Management research unit at IMF, she participates in interdisciplinary investigations of population dynamics, fisheries impacts, and ecosystem functioning across North Sea habitats. Current projects emphasize spatial management solutions for sustainable fisheries and habitat conservation in the Wadden Sea World Heritage site.
