Julia Canitz

Dr. Julia Canitz is a Post-Doctoral Fellow in the Marine and Environmental Science Department at Hampton University School of Science. Her research focuses on population genomics and evolutionary biology, with a specialization in understanding species evolution through biogeographic, taxonomic, and adaptive approaches. She is currently leading a National Science Foundation-funded project (Award NSF OPP #2146068) investigating the global population structure and evolutionary history of leopard seals (Hydrurga leptonyx), analyzing genetic connectivity across worldwide populations. Her work involves cutting-edge molecular methods and field research in Chilean Patagonia through the GlobaLeps Research Group, an international coalition of leopard seal researchers.

Dr. Canitz’s research integrates ecological and behavioral studies to explore how evolutionary processes shape species adaptation. Her current NSF-funded project emphasizes the leopard seal’s genetic diversity and its implications for conservation and evolutionary resilience. She collaborates with Principal Investigators Dr. Sabine Kienle and Dr. Carolina Bonin-Lewallen, contributing to interdisciplinary marine science initiatives.
