Julia Cabanas serves as a Design Fellow in the Department of Architecture at the University of Cambridge within the Faculty of Architecture and History of Art, concurrently working as a Senior Architect at Arup on multidisciplinary transport, infrastructure, and science projects. She acts as Arup’s Inclusion Ally for Cities, Planning and Design, championing inclusive design across disciplines.
Her academic foundation includes:
- Undergraduate studies at the University of Cambridge
- Master of Architecture (MArch) at the University of Cambridge, with thesis research focused on urban segregation and spatial justice in America
Julia’s research spans bamboo architecture, demonstrated through collaborative projects in the Philippines with Southeast Asian designers and experts, and critically examines spatial justice frameworks. She actively promotes inclusive design methodologies in professional practice while contributing architectural writing to publications like The Architectural Review. Her work bridges academic theory with real-world applications in sustainable materials and equitable urban development.
Professional engagements include invited speaking and guest critic roles at the City College of New York, alongside prior experience at Carmody Groarke, Serie Architects, and DSDHA. As an alumna of New Architecture Writers, she integrates critical discourse into her design practice.
