Julia Berazneva is an Associate Professor of Economics and affiliate faculty at the Environmental Studies Program at Middlebury College. She joined the faculty in 2015. Her research focuses on environmental and resource economics, emphasizing human-environment interactions and sustainable development in both low-income countries and the U.S. She teaches courses in microeconomic theory, environmental economics, and climate change economics.
Dr. Berazneva holds a PhD in Applied Economics from Cornell University (2015), an MSc in Development Studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), London, and a BA in Economics from Mount Holyoke College. Her doctoral research analyzed natural resource management in rural Sub-Saharan Africa, using data from western Kenya (2011–2012).
Her research interests span development economics, climate policy, and the intersection of environmental challenges with societal outcomes. Recent work examines forest loss impacts, agricultural information markets in Malawi, and the behavioral dimensions of climate engagement. She has advised student projects on environmental policy, including independent studies in ENVS and economics.
Dr. Berazneva’s teaching includes core courses like Microeconomic Theory (ECON 0255), Climate Change Economics (ECON 0365), and Environment & Development (ECON 0466). She supports advanced student initiatives through supervised independent studies and senior thesis mentorship.
