Julia Bell is a Reader in Creative Writing at Birkbeck, University of London, where she is affiliated with the School of Creative Arts, Culture and Communication. She convenes the MA in Creative Writing program and serves as Project Director of the website MIROnline, a significant resource for emerging writers.
Her academic work spans multiple creative domains:
- Creative Writing pedagogy and practice
- Contemporary fiction exploring social issues and identity
- Poetry and experimental forms including verse memoir
- Literary essays examining cultural and political intersections
- Theoretical explorations of attention and writing practice
Bell's publications reveal a consistent evolution from traditional novel forms toward increasingly experimental and hybrid genres. Her early novels 'Massive,' 'Dirty Work,' and 'The Dark Light' established her focus on social issues through accessible narrative forms, while her more recent work like 'Radical Attention' and 'Hymnal' demonstrates a shift toward essayistic and poetic exploration of complex themes. This trajectory reflects her belief that 'writing well takes courage, patience, attention and commitment,' with her work increasingly engaging with political resistance, personal transformation, and innovative literary forms.
As a dedicated supervisor, Bell employs a collaborative approach as Joint Principal Supervisor for doctoral candidates. Her current supervisees include Charlotte Northall, Matthew Bates, and Paul Martin, while recent graduates include Melanie Jones (2025), Lily Dunn (2023), Keith Jarrett (2021), and Golnoosh Nourpanah (2019). Her supervision philosophy centers on pairing creative work with academic research, supporting students working on diverse projects ranging from chemsex subculture to queer Iranian identity, always emphasizing the integration of practice and critical reflection.
