Jules A. Hoffmann is a Distinguished Professor at the University of Strasbourg and Research Director of CNRS, awarded the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discoveries in innate immunity activation. As President of the French Academy of Sciences (2007-2008), he established foundational research on Toll receptor function using Drosophila models, revealing evolutionary conserved immune mechanisms. His work transformed understanding of septic shock and antifungal responses.
Hoffmann's research bridges evolutionary biology and immunology, demonstrating how insect defense mechanisms inform mammalian immune responses. He maintains collaborations with institutions including Trinity College Dublin where he serves as Honorary Professor.
- Major Honors: Nobel Prize, CNRS Gold Medal, Shaw Prize, Balzan Prize
- Fellowships: National Academy of Sciences (US), German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, Russian Academy of Sciences
