Jukka Horppila

Jukka Horppila is a Professor at the University of Helsinki, affiliated with the Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences, where he leads the Lake Ecosystem Dynamics research group within the Ecosystems and Environment Research Programme and the Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science (HELSUS). His research focuses on the dynamics of lake ecosystems, particularly addressing challenges related to water quality, lake restoration, and the increasingly important issue of lake brownification.

Horppila's research interests span several critical areas in freshwater ecology and management:

Horppila has received recognition for his work, most notably as a recipient of the Frontiers Planet Prize 2023 National Champion of Finland award in April 2024. His research has been instrumental in developing new approaches to lake restoration, particularly regarding the management of internal phosphorus loading.

As a supervisor for the Doctoral Programme in Interdisciplinary Environmental Sciences, Horppila has guided numerous doctoral students through their research. His grant portfolio includes multiple significant projects focused on lake restoration techniques, including "Humuskuormituksen mittarit, jatko" (2023-2028), "VESIKUJA: Vesistöjen sisäinen kuormitus hyötykäyttöön" (2020), and "Alusveden puhdistus ympärivuotiseksi" (2018-2020).

Horppila leads the Lake Ecosystem Dynamics research group, which focuses on understanding the complex interactions within lake ecosystems and developing practical solutions for lake management challenges.
