Judy Malloy is a Lecturer in the Art & Technology / Sound Practices department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC). She holds additional affiliations as a former Distinguished Fellow at Princeton University (2013-2014) and Digital Studies Fellow at Rutgers Camden (2016-2017). Her academic career began with roles as an information programmer at Ball Aerospace and technical librarian in various scientific institutions.
Education: B.A. from Middlebury College (1964).
Research Interests: Judy’s work focuses on electronic literature, hyperfiction, and generative poetry. She pioneers in digital art forms, exploring intersections between technology and narrative. Key themes include social media poetics, cyber-art history, and feminist critiques of technology. Her works like its name was Penelope (1993) and Uncle Roger (1986) are foundational in hypertext literature.
Recent Works & Honors: Recent exhibitions include the 2024 File Sao Paulo Electronic Language Festival and the 2025 California Museum of Photography exhibition. Notable awards include recognition from the National Gallery of Art and inclusion in the Getty Series @PST_ART. Her 2024 talk at ELO24 explored early web-based literature.
Teaching: Courses include Women Artists in Cyberspace, The Electronic Manuscript, and Social Media Narratives, emphasizing creative practice in digital environments.
Lab/Teams: Involved with initiatives like the Interactive Art Conference (co-founded in 1993) and Arts Wire, a pioneering social media platform for artists.
