Judith Tyle Massee

Judith Tyle Massee (1968–1998) was a pioneering professor of dance at Reed College, where she championed the discipline’s academic legitimacy. Her career spanned three decades, during which she transformed dance education at Reed, advocating for interdisciplinary approaches and fostering collaborations across arts and sciences. She held the title of Director of Dance and played a pivotal role in establishing courses like Dance History (Dance 320) and Choreography (Dance 420). Her teaching emphasized technique, discipline, and creativity, earning her acclaim as a transformative educator.

Education: Massee studied at Portland State University (BA in Education), later deepening her expertise through summer studies with Pearl Lang (Martha Graham’s protégé) and at the Laban School of Dance. She also trained in anatomy-based ballet techniques with Don Farnsworth.

Research Interests: Massee’s work centered on modern dance, choreography, and the intersection of dance with disciplines like theater, psychology, and literature. She prioritized live musical accompaniment in classes and advocated for dance as a rigorous academic pursuit. Her interdisciplinary focus led to collaborations like the dance/theatre major and thesis advising for students merging dance with other fields.

Legacy: Despite not securing tenure, her impact endured through initiatives like the Portland-based Dancers Workshop, the Summer Dance Workshop, and the Judith Massee Performance Lab in Reed’s Performing Arts Building. Her humor, innovation, and dedication inspired generations of dancers, including notable alumni like Keith Martin and Jose Brown.
