She previously founded and directed the Media Research Bureau at the University of Missouri School of Journalism and served as news editor of the Missourian Weekly and Family Missourian. A long-time member of the National Federation of Press Women, her research focuses on research methods, civic journalism, healthcare campaigns, and social marketing.
Her work spans critical analyses of media coverage in crises like Hurricane Katrina, September 11, and military conflicts. She has authored influential books such as Reporting from the Front: The Media and the Military and Women Journalists at Ground Zero: Covering Crisis, alongside peer-reviewed articles on topics ranging from Q methodology to media framing of international trade.
Dr. Sylvester’s research frequently intersects with public health communication, particularly regarding racial attitudes toward healthcare and health messaging strategies for underserved communities. Her expertise in crisis communication and media ethics has informed both academic discourse and practical media practices.
Her teaching philosophy emphasizes hands-on research methodologies, as seen in her integration of Q methodology into undergraduate courses. Despite no listed awards, her contributions to journalism education and disaster communication have positioned her as a leading scholar in mass communication studies.
