Judith Pallot is a Visiting Professor at the University of Helsinki’s Aleksanteri Institute - Finnish Centre for Russian and East European Studies. Her research focuses on post-Soviet penal systems, prison sociology, and the historical legacies of Soviet-era policies on contemporary institutions. She holds a PhD from the University of London and has conducted extensive fieldwork in Eastern European prisons. Pallot leads the ERC-funded project 'Gulag Echoes in the Multicultural Prison' (2018-2023), examining ethnic and religious dynamics in Russian penal institutions.
Her academic work spans studies of prison officer roles, epidemic management in carceral settings, and the impact of Soviet architecture on modern penitentiaries. She has published widely in journals like Incarceration and Journal of the History of Medicine, and contributed to edited volumes on topics ranging from post-Soviet studies to Gulag historiography. Pallot also actively engages in policy debates, notably on academic cooperation during the Russia-Ukraine war.
Notable awards include the European Research Council (ERC) Grant for her groundbreaking work on Gulag legacies. She has organized conferences on Eastern European penal systems and collaborated with institutions across Europe. Her research bridges historical analysis with contemporary issues, offering critical insights into the intersection of ethnicity, power, and punishment in post-Soviet states.
