Judith Lewin is an Associate Professor of English at Union College, serving as Chair of the English Department and Director of General Education. She holds a B.A. from Brown University and a Ph.D. from Princeton University. Her research focuses on Jewish women’s fiction, Victorian literature, gender studies, and genre experimentation. Lewin has published widely on topics including Jewish graphic novels, the representation of Jewish women in 19th-century novels, and pedagogical approaches to teaching Jewish American literature.
Her work bridges literary analysis with cultural studies, examining themes such as identity, gender, and religious symbolism in texts like Ivanhoe and contemporary Jewish American narratives. She has contributed to encyclopedic entries, peer-reviewed journals, and edited volumes on topics ranging from Balzac’s Jewish archetypes to Sandra Goldbacher’s The Governess.
Lewin’s recent publications (2016–2021) emphasize interdisciplinary approaches to modern Jewish literature and cultural identity. She actively participates in academic leadership roles, shaping curricula and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration through her directorship of general education programs at Union College.
