Judith Irmela Haug is an Associate Professor in Music before 1900 at the Department of Musicology, University of Oslo, where she has held a permanent position since September 2023. Her academic career spans European and Ottoman musical traditions with a specialized focus on transcultural exchange during the early modern period.
Her primary research interests include:
- Notation systems and oral tradition in musical transmission
- Intercultural music encounters and cross-cultural perception of sound
- Global music history with particular emphasis on Ottoman-European exchanges
- Music history of the Ottoman Empire and neighboring regions
- Music iconography and historically informed performance practice
Dr. Haug's scholarly work demonstrates remarkable interdisciplinary breadth, connecting musicology with medical history, diplomatic studies, and cultural anthropology. Her recent publications reveal a sustained engagement with 17th-century Ottoman musical culture, particularly through the lens of ʿAlī Ufuḳī (Albertus Bobovius), examining how musical notation functioned within Ottoman society and how music intersected with medicine, food culture, and diplomatic practices.
She teaches several courses including EXFAC03-MUS 24V Faculty Examination for Musicology, MUS2445 24V Deep dive into the music soundtrack, MUS2301 24H Song Cultures Before 1600, and MUS1445 24H History of music. Dr. Haug serves as grant awarding coordinator for COST Action CA21161 EarlyMuse and sits on the Editorial Board of the Journal of the American Musicological Society.
Her current research projects include 'BærUt! Competence hub for sustainable digital scientific publications' and 'CA21161 - A new ecosystem of early music studies (EarlyMuse)', reflecting her commitment to both historical scholarship and contemporary academic infrastructure development.
