Judith Dean is a Professor of International Economics at the Brandeis International Business School, Brandeis University, and an affiliated faculty member in the Department of Economics. Her work focuses on international trade, economic development, and environmental economics. She has held prior roles as a Senior International Economist at the US International Trade Commission (USITC) and as Associate Professor at Johns Hopkins University's SAIS and Assistant Professor at Bowdoin College. Dean has been a consultant to the World Bank, OECD, and a Visiting Scholar at institutions including the Indian Statistical Institute and George Washington University’s Institute for International Economic Policy.
Her research explores the interplay between trade, environmental sustainability, and global value chains, with particular attention to China and India. Notable contributions include analyzing trade liberalization’s impact on poverty reduction and the environmental consequences of production fragmentation. Dean has also served on the boards of World Relief and Gordon College, and was named a Senior Fellow at the Rimini Centre for Economic Analysis (2020–present).
Key awards include the 4th Annual John Mason Lecture in Economics (Gordon College, 2018) and the Clayton Yeutter International Trade Program Visiting Scholar (University of Nebraska, 2012–2013). Her work bridges academic research with policy relevance, emphasizing evidence-based approaches to trade and development challenges.
