Juan Torres is a Full Professor at the School of Urban Planning and Landscape Architecture, University of Montreal. He holds a PhD in Planning from the University of Montreal (2008), a Master's in Urban Planning (2003), and a professional architecture degree from ITESO University, Mexico (2000). His postdoctoral work spanned philosophy and urban ethics at Cornell University and Université de Montréal. Torres serves as Vice-recteur adjoint aux études and is affiliated with key research networks, including Observatoire Ivanhoé Cambridge and Chaire de recherche du Canada en urbanisation durable.
His research explores urban design, children's mobility, and participatory planning. He investigates how built environments impact youth autonomy and advocates for inclusive cities through projects like Levelling the Playing Fields and TRYSPACES. Torres emphasizes community co-creation, working with municipalities in Montreal and Guadalajara to develop child-friendly policies.
Torres's publications focus on transportation equity, youth engagement, and sustainable urbanization. Recent works analyze road safety interventions, public housing well-being, and play-oriented urban design. His articles consistently highlight policy applications, such as improving school-zone safety and integrating youth voices in municipal planning.
He has supervised 15+ graduate students on topics like cycling infrastructure, graffiti culture, and playful urban spaces. Grants include CIHR and SSHRC funding for projects on outdoor play and mobility justice.
