Juan Rojas Suarez del Real

Dr. Juan Rojas Suarez del Real is an Assistant Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Lipscomb University's Raymond B. Jones College of Engineering. His research focuses on intelligent robot decision-making in multi-agent and single-agent scenarios, including Human-Robot Interaction and manipulation in logistics and industrial settings. He employs statistical methods, machine learning, deep learning, and deep reinforcement learning to advance predictive modeling for robots to better understand human and environmental behaviors.

• B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Vanderbilt University (2002, 2004, 2009).

Dr. Rojas has held previous positions, including Research Assistant Professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Research Associate Professor at Guangdong University of Technology under the “100 Young Scholars” program. He led the Intelligent Manipulation Lab and contributed to the DARPA Robotics Challenge (2015), programming the ATLAS humanoid to drive a car. He pioneered ROS courses and textbook translations in China.

He is an IEEE Senior Member (2018), serves as an Associate Editor for journals like Advanced Robotics and IEEE Robotics and Automation Letters (RAL), and participates in committees such as the IEEE Medal for Environmental and Safety Technologies.

His work emphasizes encoding intelligence through predictive modeling to enable robots to handle complex manipulation tasks and recover from anomalies. He collaborates with institutions like the CUHK T Stone Robotics Institute and the Hong Center for Logistic Robotics.
