Juan-Pablo Bermúdez is a Lecturer in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Southampton, Faculty of Arts and Humanities. He is an active researcher at the intersection of philosophy, cognitive science, and artificial intelligence ethics. He leads the Templeton-funded project Self-Control in Context (2022–2025), which examines self-control in the Global South and challenges existing assumptions in behavioral science.
His research interests include:
- Philosophy of mind and human agency
- Cognitive science of self-control
- Ethics of artificial intelligence and autonomy
- Moral psychology and decision-making
- Poverty, rationality, and social context
- Behavioral interventions and nudge theory
Recent publications reveal a strong interdisciplinary focus, combining philosophical analysis with empirical psychology and AI design. His work explores the feeling of effort, lay theories of self-control, ethical boundaries of AI influence, and the physiological correlates of moral decision-making. He investigates how AI systems—particularly voice assistants and nudging technologies—can either support or undermine human autonomy, and develops tools for ethical AI development.
Juan-Pablo is actively supervising PhD students and accepting new applicants. He collaborates with researchers across neuroscience, psychology, and human-computer interaction. His work is supported by the Templeton World Charity Foundation.
Notable projects and roles:
- Principal Investigator, Self-Control in Context (Templeton-funded, 2022–2025)
- Contributor to AI ethics frameworks and mental harm classification
- Developer of tools for autonomy-supportive AI design
