Juan Luis Gastaldi is a Lecturer in the Department of Computer Science at ETH Zurich and Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow at the Chair of History and Philosophy of Mathematical Sciences (D-GESS). He serves as Managing Director of the Turing Center at ETH Zurich and is an external associate researcher at the SPHERE laboratory (Université de Paris). His work bridges philosophy, history, and formal sciences, focusing on the formalization of meaning in mathematics, logic, and computer science from the 19th century to the present.
Education includes a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Bordeaux (2014), studies at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris, and degrees in Mathematics and Political Sciences. Key research areas include the history of formal logic, semiotics of mathematics, and computational linguistics. He leads the H2020-funded SemioMaths project exploring automated analysis of mathematical corpora using grammatical inference techniques.
Notable awards include the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship (2019-2022) and a Research Fellowship at Akademie Schloss Solitude (2011-2012). His recent work spans interdisciplinary projects like the 'Semiomaths' workshop series and edited volumes on computing cultures and mathematical practice. Current projects address the philosophical implications of neural machine learning in mathematics and the structuralist foundations of computational linguistics.
