Juan José Rivas Moreno is a Max Weber Fellow at the Department of History, European University Institute, where he conducts advanced research on global trade and finance during the Early Modern period. He is affiliated with the Max Weber Programme for Postdoctoral Studies and contributes to the 'Finance and Society' research cluster under the mentorship of Giorgio Riello.

He has published on accounting practices in early modern religious institutions, the organization of Manila’s capital market, and its connections with the English East India Company, contributing to Spanish, Italian, and British academic publications.
His recent publications, including a 2024 book and article, analyze institutions and trade financing in Manila, reflecting a strong thematic focus on the mechanisms of long-distance trade and early capitalist development. These works highlight his expertise in the institutional frameworks of early modern global commerce and the role of Manila as a financial hub in the Pacific.
