Juan Jose Gutierrez

Dr. Juan Jose Gutierrez is a Professor of Anthropology at California State University, Monterey Bay, within the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. He serves as the director of the Institute for Mexican and Mexico US Studies and is responsible for the Cultural Anthropology Concentration in the School of Social, Behavioral, and Global Studies.

Dr. Gutierrez earned his Ph.D. in Cultural Anthropology from UC Santa Barbara in 1997. His professional affiliations include Vice President of the International Oral History Association, Spanish Language Editor of the IOHA journal 'Words and Silences,' and member of the International Board of the Oxford-based Oral History Journal.

His research focuses on migration, rural development, pedagogy, higher education, immigration, oral history, and cultural anthropology. Dr. Gutierrez teaches courses SBS332, SBS345, SBS378, SBS388, SBS300, SBS321, SBS400, and SBS335, which reflect his expertise in cultural anthropology and Mexican studies.

Dr. Gutierrez's scholarly output demonstrates sustained engagement with Mexican and Mexico-US relations through anthropological and oral history methodologies. His leadership in the Institute for Mexican and Mexico US Studies has helped establish CSUMB as a center for research on cross-border cultural dynamics.
