Juan Felipe Riaño is an Assistant Professor of Economics at Georgetown University since 2023, following a Postdoctoral Fellowship at Stanford University’s King Center on Global Development. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of British Columbia (2022) and degrees from Universidad de los Andes. He co-directs Georgetown’s undergraduate PECO major and is a fellow with The United Programs for Political Economy Research (UPPER).
His research focuses on Political Economy, Development Economics, and Economic History, with emphasis on bureaucratic institutions, conflict legacies, and state capacity. Notable works include analyzing Colombia’s public sector nepotism and the economic impacts of historical conflicts in Laos and Ukraine. He has published in journals such as Economic Journal and Economic Policy.
Riaño teaches graduate and undergraduate courses on political economy, development, and empirical methods. He has collaborated with researchers across institutions, co-authoring studies on topics ranging from electoral clientelism in Colombia to post-conflict reconstruction in Ukraine.
