Dr. Juan David Arbelaez serves as Assistant Professor in the Department of Crop Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, with an additional appointment as Assistant Professor at the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies. He leads the spring oat (Avena sativa) and rice (Oryza sativa) breeding programs as part of the Small Grains Improvement team at UIUC.
Dr. Arbelaez's research spans several critical areas of plant breeding and genetics:
- Developing varieties of spring oat and rice with enhanced nutritional quality
- Helping breeders worldwide implement cost-effective breeding methods and tools
- Accelerating breeding for multiple traits including yield and grain quality
- Developing cover crop oat varieties for Midwest soil conservation
- International collaborations with rice breeders across Africa, Latin America, and Asia
His work bridges advanced genomic techniques with practical applications for improving agricultural productivity and sustainability. Dr. Arbelaez has established significant international partnerships to accelerate implementation of new technologies in rice breeding programs worldwide, with practical applications for improving farm income and addressing environmental challenges like soil erosion.
Dr. Arbelaez maintains an active research program with multiple recent publications demonstrating expertise in genomic selection models and grain quality improvement. His research has practical implications for both regional Midwest agriculture and international food security initiatives, particularly in developing agricultural systems where rice is a staple crop.
