Juan Carlos Nieves Sánchez is an Associate Professor (Docent) in Artificial Intelligence at Umeå University's Department of Computing Science. He serves as Programme Director for the MSc in AI and member of the Doctoral Education council in Computer Science. His research focuses on theoretical and applied aspects of decision making in AI systems, nonmonotonic reasoning, and ethical implications of AI. He leads the Formal Methods for Trustworthy Hybrid Intelligence group and is affiliated with the Responsible Artificial Intelligence team.
Education: Docent in Computer Science (Umeå University, 2018), PhD in Artificial Intelligence (UPC BarcelonaTech, 2008), and MSc in AI (UPC, 2006). Active in EU projects including AI4EU and Trust AI, and serves on program committees for major AI conferences like IJCAI and AAAI.
Research spans argumentation frameworks, digital forensics, and AI ethics. Current projects include developing trustworthy AI for police interventions and AI education initiatives. Supervised over 5 PhD students in topics like activity-centric reasoning and clinical decision support systems.
