Juan Bolivar is a Lecturer in Painting at Camberwell College of Arts, part of University of the Arts London. Born in Caracas, Venezuela in 1966, he is both an active artist and curator with a significant international presence in the contemporary art world.
Education
- Goldsmiths College
Bolivar's artistic practice investigates the tension between meaning and form through painting. His work combines elements from disparate sources to explore intertextuality, language, and abstraction. A key aspect of his research involves re-enacting seminal canons of modernist painting, such as Kazimir Malevich's 'black square,' using these contexts of (mis)interpretation to create new meanings through intertextual references with popular culture. With a strong investment in ideas of text, his research explores the porosity of images and text through a material investigation and repositioning of hard-edge painting. His curatorial practice spans over 50 exhibitions with a focus on intergenerational, multidisciplinary practices and polysemic cultural dialogues.
His scholarly output demonstrates a sustained engagement with modernist painting traditions while exploring contemporary issues of materiality, reproduction, and cultural references. His 2024 article 'How to Look: Ad Reinhardt's Black Paintings' examines the implications of viewing paintings in digital reproduction versus physical encounter. His work often bridges historical art movements with contemporary culture, as seen in exhibitions like 'Love Bites (after van Doesburg, 1924)' and 'Maker's Mark (after Mondrian, 1921).'
Scientific Awards
- Two-time recipient of the Pollock-Krasner award
- Prize winner at Nanjing Museum's first international exhibition of contemporary art
Bolivar's work is included in The Government Art Collection and has been featured in significant exhibitions such as New British Painting at John Hansard Gallery, University of Southampton and East International at Norwich School of Art. As an educator at Camberwell College of Arts, he guides students in painting practice while maintaining an active exhibition schedule. His curatorial projects often involve cross-cultural dialogues, as evidenced by exhibitions like 'Earthworks' and 'Earth Wind & Fire' which brought together British artists with Indigenous Australian artists. His studio practice is complemented by his scholarly contributions to art publications like Turps Banana Magazine, where he has conducted interviews with significant artists including Peter Halley and John Greenwood.
