João Filipe Marques

João Filipe Marques is a tenured Associate Professor at the University of Algarve's Faculty of Economics and an integrated researcher at CinTurs (Research Center for Tourism, Sustainability and Wellbeing), where he coordinates the 'Tourism, Leisure and Society' research area. With over 30 years of teaching experience in social sciences and sociological theories, he previously directed the BA in Sociology (2004–2013), MA in Sociology (2008–2024), and co-coordinated the PhD in Sociology (2013–2019).

Recent publications (2019–2025) focus on tourism sociology, with themes like motorhome traveler typologies, creative tourism co-creation, sustainable communities, and resident-tourist relationships. Articles appear in high-impact journals including Tourist Studies, Journal of Cleaner Production, and Leisure Studies, reflecting interdisciplinary approaches to tourism and sustainability.

He actively contributes to funded projects like CREATOUR (creative tourism in rural Portugal) and RESTUR (sustainable tourism in Algarve), fostering partnerships across Portuguese and European institutions. As a supervisor, he has guided numerous graduate students in sociology and tourism research.

At CinTurs, he leads research on tourism's societal dimensions, leveraging the lab's resources for studies on sustainable tourism models and community engagement.
