João Costa is a Full Professor of Linguistics at Universidade Nova de Lisboa and the current Portuguese Minister of Education. His academic career spans roles as Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities (2013-2015), Chair of the Scientific Council for Humanities and Social Sciences at the Portuguese Research Council (2012-2015), and leadership positions in OECD's education initiatives, including Chair of the Teaching and Learning International Survey (2017-2021).

- Visiting scholar at MIT (1996)
His research focuses on theoretical syntax, language acquisition and development, and educational linguistics. He has led nationally funded research projects on language acquisition and coordinated graduate programs in linguistics, supervising over 40 PhD/Master's theses. He also contributed to national educational policy, including the final version of linguistic terminology for grammar teaching in Portuguese schools.
Scientific awards include the 2020 Pró-inclusão Inclusive Education Award and multiple Banco Santander/FCSH International Productivity Awards. He served as President of the Portuguese Linguistics Society (2006-2008) and coordinated the National Program for Professional Development of Portuguese teachers.
