Dr. Joycelyn Moody (she/they/hers/theirs) is the Sue E. Denman Distinguished Chair in American Literature and Professor of English at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). She specializes in Black life writing, Black feminisms, and Black print cultures, with a focus on African American women's spiritual autobiographies and literary traditions.
- Education: MA in English (University of Wisconsin-Madison), PhD in English (University of Kansas, 1993)
- Editorial Roles: Former Editor of African American Review (2004-2009), Series Editor of African American Literature in Translation (Cambridge UP), Co-Editor of Regenerations: African American Literature and Culture series (West Virginia UP, 2009-present)
- Leadership: Founding Director of UTSA's African American Literatures and Cultures Institute (2010-2022), Fulbright Canada Research Chair in Society and Culture at the University of Alberta (2022-2023)
Her research examines intersections of race, gender, and religion in African American literary traditions, with notable works including Sentimental Confessions and A History of African American Autobiography. She has served on academic advisory boards and contributed to critical editions like Elleanor Eldridge's Memoirs.
Current projects include exploring transatlantic Black print cultures and mentoring through the UTSA African American Literatures and Cultures Institute. Her publications span auto/biography theory, feminist frameworks, and pedagogical resources for African American literature.
