Joyce Mullan is a Teaching Assistant Professor at the School of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences, Stevens Institute of Technology. She holds a PhD in Philosophy from The New School for Social Research (2003), with earlier degrees in Philosophy and Political Science from the same institution and a BA in Political Science from San Francisco State University (1978).
Her research focuses on Ancient and Enlightenment Ethical and Political Theory, emphasizing Feminist, Comparative, and non-violent approaches. Key interests include Environmental Ethics, Ecofeminism, Animal Rights, and analyses of social inequality through thinkers like Simone Weil, Judith Shklar, and Hannah Arendt. She critiques gender dynamics in classical political thought and explores how marginalized voices are represented in ancient texts like Aristophanes’ Lysistrata and Euripides’ Hecuba.
Mullan has presented over 30 conference papers since 2000, addressing topics such as Thucydides’ Mytilenean Debate, Hesiod’s concepts of strife, and the intersection of non-violence with existentialist philosophy. Notable publications include works on Rousseau and Kant’s conceptions of humanity and analyses of Fanon and Gandhi’s ethical frameworks.
She has received recognition for academic excellence, including multiple Dean’s List placements during her undergraduate studies. Mullan is actively involved in university service, leading initiatives like the Ethics Bowl, Pinnacle Scholar Roundtable, and Constitution Day events. She advises the Stevens Law Society and students pursuing pre-law tracks.
