Joyce Lee, MD, MPH, is the Robert P. Kelch, MD Research Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Michigan Medical School with a joint appointment in the Department of Nutritional Sciences at the U-M School of Public Health. She holds leadership roles including Co-Director of the Momentum Center (a childhood obesity center), Associate Chief Medical Information Officer for Pediatric Research, and Associate Chair of Health Metrics and Learning Health Systems in Pediatrics. Her multidisciplinary work integrates clinical informatics, health systems design, and participatory design to address obesity, diabetes, and pediatric endocrinology challenges.
Her research focuses on learning health systems, leveraging electronic health records and clinical informatics to improve care delivery and outcomes for children with chronic illnesses. Key areas include type 1 and type 2 diabetes management, obesity prevention, and the application of mobile health technologies and patient-driven innovations. She has over 150 peer-reviewed publications and has led NIH-funded grants since 2008.
Dr. Lee’s scientific awards include the Paul Kaplowitz, MD Endowed Lectureship (2016). She advocates for integrating design thinking into healthcare, emphasizing patient-centered approaches and the Maker Movement in health innovation. Her roles also include Ambulatory Care Clinical Chief for Pediatric Medical Subspecialties, guiding ambulatory system redesign and health IT integration.
