Joyce Benner serves as a Visiting Fellow at the Faculty of Behavioural and Movement Sciences, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, with dual appointments in Amsterdam Movement Sciences (AMS) focusing on Musculoskeletal Health and Rehabilitation & Development. Her work bridges clinical orthopaedics and movement sciences, emphasizing evidence-based rehabilitation protocols.
Her research centers on orthopaedic surgical outcomes, particularly total knee and hip arthroplasty. Key interests include patient-reported outcome measures, physical functioning trajectories, psychosocial determinants of recovery (anxiety, depression, pain catastrophising), and biomechanical recovery patterns. She employs prospective cohort methodologies to investigate preoperative predictors and long-term postoperative trajectories, with strong emphasis on translational applications for clinical practice.
Analysis of her recent publications reveals consistent focus on arthroplasty outcomes through large-scale cohort studies. Her work demonstrates how mental health factors and preoperative physical status critically influence surgical results, while biomechanical analyses of strength recovery provide actionable insights for rehabilitation protocols. The research integrates quantitative movement analysis with patient-centered metrics to optimize recovery pathways.
Benner contributes to the Amsterdam Movement Sciences ecosystem, collaborating within the Musculoskeletal Health and Rehabilitation & Development programs that drive interdisciplinary research connecting basic movement science with clinical rehabilitation applications. Her current teaching includes the course 'Challenges in Musculoskeletal Health' for the 2025-2026 academic year.
