Jostein Vik is a Professor in the Department of Sociology and Political Science at NTNU. His research focuses on public policy, political economy, and their intersections with agriculture, fisheries, and rural development. He has extensive expertise in policy analysis, particularly regarding agricultural reforms, fisheries management, and EU rural policies. Vik teaches courses such as Qualitative Methods, EU Rural Political Economy, and Comparative Politics.
His research explores challenges in policy-making, including rural development trade-offs (the 'rural development trilemma'), the socio-political impacts of agricultural technology (e.g., automated milking systems), and the discourse around meat reduction policies in Norway. He has authored/co-authored over 50 publications, including peer-reviewed articles and reports on topics like bioenergy systems, farm animal welfare, and innovation in agriculture.
Vik collaborates with institutions like the Norwegian Rural Development Centre (Norsk senter for bygdeforskning) and has advised on policy frameworks for sustainable agriculture and fisheries. His work emphasizes the political dimensions of rural economies, center-periphery conflicts, and the governance of emerging technologies.
