Joss Moorkens

Dr. Joss Moorkens is an Associate Professor at Dublin City University's School of Applied Language & Intercultural Studies, a Funded Investigator and Science Lead at the ADAPT Centre, and a member of DCU's Institute of Ethics and Centre for Translation and Textual Studies. His work bridges translation studies, technology, and ethics, with a focus on machine translation (MT), translation ethics, and the sociotechnical impacts of translation tools. Moorkens has authored/coauthored over 60 publications on topics including MT usability, translator precarity, and post-editing practices. He leads the Technology Working Group for the European Masters in Translation network and co-edits the journal Translation Spaces. His research emphasizes ethical considerations in AI-driven translation, translator well-being in the gig economy, and sustainable automation practices.

Moorkens' research interests include translation technology user studies, the sociology of translation labor, and the ethical implications of machine translation in education and social media. He has co-edited key texts like Translation Quality Assessment: From Principles to Practice (Springer, 2018) and co-authored textbooks such as Translation Tools and Technologies (Routledge, 2023). His recent work explores MT's role in shaping public opinion via platforms and the need for global ethical standards in translation automation.

Notable contributions include developing tools like the mobile post-editing app Kanjingo, advocating for translator-centered interface designs, and investigating the impact of austerity on translation work.
