Joshua Speed is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics at University of Mississippi Medical Center's School of Medicine. His laboratory (G553) investigates cardiovascular and renal physiology, with specific focus on metabolic syndrome, circadian rhythms, and mechanisms by which salt intake affects metabolism.
Research employs genetically modified rodent models, adiposity measurement through echo MRI, insulin sensitivity testing, cell culture techniques, and molecular analysis including droplet digital PCR and Western Blotting. His work examines lipid metabolism and insulin signaling pathways in adipose and muscle tissue.
Publication analysis reveals strong focus on endothelin signaling pathways in sodium homeostasis, circadian regulation of renal function, sex differences in metabolic physiology, and adipose tissue inflammation. Recent work explores molecular connections between circadian gene expression, salt sensitivity, and hypertension development.
His research has established key mechanisms linking endothelin receptors to insulin resistance, adipocyte function, and sodium handling across multiple physiological systems.
